Description
Molten Glass & Gamal Wood Sculpture. Artisans in Ubad, Bali, work in a glassblowing workshop to recycle glass vases into a beautiful shape mounted onto discarded/waste wood. They are heated to almost melting point and then placed onto pieces of gamal wood. Each piece is unique, the glass melted to hug the natural contours of the wood on which it perches.
Approximate height 22-25cm. The wood shape is unique so the size of this and the finished product varies. The dimensions and photo are shown as a guide only.
URC Head of Communications Andy Jackson saw these being made in 2023. He said: “These vases are truly amazing. I’ve saw many of them being made in Bali where they are sold wholesale and to tourists and other visitors by shops, each with hundreds of these beautiful glass and wood bowls and vases. Each vase is unique, and they are ideal as a centrepiece or to show cut flowers.”
Gamal wood (Gliricidia sepium) is used in Bali to provide shade for plantation crops such as coffee, live fencing, fodder, firewood, green manure and intercropping. Gamal tolerates being cut back to crop height, and can even be cut right back to root (coppiced), every year.
